They were the favorite part of the morning paper for many of us growing up, when we were introduced to the wacky and sometimes bizarre worlds of the characters inside their three-panel soul.

As we grew older and realized there was more to the world than Hagar and Garfield, we discovered deeply compelling stories like Maus and Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.

World upon barely possible world gets told in frame and boxes, word bubbles and strokes of pen, and the people who make it possible are Cartoonists, and National Cartoonists Day is dedicated to them and their craft.

How to Celebrate National Cartoonists Day

National Cartoonists Day is best celebrated by picking up a comic you used to know and love, and walking down memory lane on the part it played in you growing up.

Enjoy Calvin and Hobbes

Open up that worn Calvin and Hobbes comic book by Bill Watterson to find yourself reminiscing of memories of an adventurous boy and his stuffed tiger. Calvin and Hobbes is commonly referred to as the last great newspaper comic.

Chuckle at Dilbert

Not your cup of tea? Snicker along as you turn the pages to the lastest Dilbert cartoons, created by cartoonist Scott Adams. While more mature in content, anyone who has worked in an average office space can relate to the snarky humor presented in Dilbert.

Check Out Online Comics

Online comics are now a thing, and some of them have been running for 12 years or more, like Randy Milhollands Something Positive. Deep characters, compelling storylines, and a rapier wit make it a joy to read, though it’s certainly not for the easily offended.

Whether this comic or another one, discovering new worlds to experience through comics is a great way to spend National Cartoonists Day! You could even draw your own!

Learn More About Cartoons

Get involved with the day by learning about this fun genre! Check out some of these interesting tidbits and consider sharing them with friends:

  • The longest known individual cartoon strip is over 1,100 feet in length, and was created by female cartoonist Mons Selvam in Chennai, India in 2019. The cartoon strip is focused on Mons’ childhood, and some of her memories of her village through her fictional character, Gundomalli. Mons Selvam considers herself a “happiness illustrator” as well as a cartoonist.
  • The Katzenjammer Kids cartoon is the longest running ever, and it was even made into a play in 1903.
  • One of the first film cartoons was released for viewing in 1908, and is considered to be Fantasmagorie, a hand-drawn animated by French cartoonist Émile Cohl. The cartoon, only one minute and twenty seconds in length, consists of a stick figure man running into and morphing into other objects. The short animated cartoon was derived from 700 hand-drawn illustrations. Émile Cohl would go on to be referred to as the “father of the animated cartoon.”

History of National Cartoonists Day

National Cartoonists Day was founded in the 1990s by the National Cartoonists Society to celebrate the many accomplishments of cartonists and all the good they have brought to the world as a result!

In 1895 a man named Richard F. Outcault introduced a small bald kid in a yellow nightshirt to the world in an incredibly popular publication in the big apple at the time, the New York World. While the paper itself was looked upon with a sort of disdain by ‘real’ journalists of the time, the yellow kid was embraced by people everywhere.

Little did Outcault know that when he first created this character, it would lead to a revolution in how stories were told and presented in sequential art pieces (that’s comics, kids!), but would in fact create a new standard piece of content for newspapers everywhere.

The Yellow Kid was an archetype of the world, rather than a character in and of itself. Richard recounted that as he walked the slums of the city on his rounds, he would discover the kid walking out of houses, or sitting and hanging about on doorsteps.

The archetypical “kid” was always warm and sunny, friendly, generous, and free of malice and selfishness. How amazing that Richard saw all the good in the world in the worst parts of it, perhaps that’s a lesson in and of itself.

The Katzenjammer Kids debuted in 1897 in the American Humorist, and has changed over into the hands of three different cartoonists. The original cartoonist of the comic, Rudolph Dirks, was one of the first to regularly indicate dialogue through speech balloons; speech balloons were standardized as the form in which cartoonists indicated dialogue by the early 1900s, and is still being used today.

Not all cartoonists aim to make you laugh but also use the media as a source of discussion. With the rise of the popular political cartoon, cartoonists now use comics and illustration as a form of political discourse.

The political cartoon is an illustration, often with a caricature, to convey commentary on current events or politics. Instead of finding these on the funny pages of a newspaper, they are often found in the editorial pages of a newspaper or journal.

For many years, cartoons were viewed as low-brow in comparison to other forms of art, but the work of cartoonists is important and underappreciated. The art form has grown in popularity with a younger generation that seeks to utilize both art and culture in their media expression.

The internet has allowed cartoonists to reach a larger crowd than when only a select few cartoons were chosen for the Sunday comics section of a newspaper or shown during Saturday morning cartoon times. Today, the two-dimensional art known as comics are not only available to be seen in newspapers but magazines, books, websites, social media sites, and blogs as well!

National Cartoonists Day FAQs

What is the connection between cartoons and the term “yellow journalism”?

Cartoons played a surprising role in shaping the media. “The Yellow Kid,” a popular comic strip in the late 19th century, was central to fierce competition between publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst.

Their sensationalized coverage, featuring the comic, helped coin the term “yellow journalism,” symbolizing exaggerated, eye-catching stories meant to boost sales.

How do cartoonists in Japan celebrate their craft differently?

In Japan, manga artists honor their craft by hosting exhibitions and meet-and-greet sessions.

Manga, a distinct art form, has festivals where fans dress as their favorite characters. Some temples even host blessings for artists’ tools like brushes and pens, combining tradition with modern cartoon culture.

Which famous cartoonist worked as a spy during World War II?

Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, created propaganda cartoons during WWII.

He used his artistic talent to support the war effort by designing posters and political cartoons promoting unity and conservation.

His experience in creating these satirical pieces later influenced his whimsical children’s books.

Are there any myths about famous cartoon characters?

Many believe Mickey Mouse was the first animated character, but that’s a myth. Gertie the Dinosaur, created in 1914, predates Mickey by over a decade.

Gertie was an interactive performance piece, with its creator Winsor McCay engaging live with the animation in theaters.

What unusual materials have cartoonists used to create their art?

Cartoonists have used everything from toilet paper to steamed glass for sketches.

For example, Argentine artist Quino, creator of Mafalda, famously sketched his early ideas on cafe napkins. These unconventional materials highlight the improvisation and spontaneity in cartooning.

How has digital technology changed cartooning traditions?

Digital tools allow cartoonists to create animations and comics faster and with more precision.

Software like Procreate and Clip Studio Paint is now standard, replacing traditional ink and paper. This shift has made it easier for independent cartoonists to share their work worldwide.

What role did women play in early cartoon history?

Women like Grace Drayton shaped early cartoons. Drayton, one of the first female cartoonists, created “Dolly Dingle,” a popular paper doll character.

Her work paved the way for future female artists in an industry long dominated by men.

How do countries without a strong comic tradition celebrate National Cartoonists Day?

In some countries, local artists host workshops to teach the basics of cartooning.

These events emphasize cartoons as a universal language. In India, for example, cartoonists use the day to highlight social issues through satire and humor.

Which cartoonists gained fame posthumously?

Winsor McCay, creator of “Little Nemo,” wasn’t widely appreciated in his lifetime.

After his death, critics and historians recognized his innovative use of perspective and surreal storytelling. Today, he’s celebrated as a pioneer in the comic and animation industries.

What unusual themes have been tackled in comics historically?

During the 1940s, comics covered everything from superhero adventures to unexpected topics like dental hygiene and banking.

For example, DC Comics once published a strip promoting safe banking practices, showcasing the flexibility of cartoons as a medium for education.

Today is International Midwives’ Day https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-midwives-day/ https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-midwives-day/#respond Mon, 05 May 2025 00:00:00 +0000 http://149.28.235.141/?post_type=days&p=37135

The midwife considers the miracle of childbirth as normal and leaves it alone unless there’s trouble. The obstetrician normally sees childbirth as trouble; if he leaves it alone, it’s a miracle.

Sheila Stubbs

It’s clear to anyone who gives it half a thought that women did not always give birth in hospitals, and in fact, they most commonly would give birth in their own homes under the guide of an experienced woman.

There were those who specialized in the birthing process and who helped it come to fruition naturally, and those women were called Midwives.

International Midwives’ Day serves to remind us that the female body is perfectly capable of giving birth and carrying a child to term without some of the invasive methods employed by Obstetricians and other practitioners.

How to Celebrate International Midwives’ Day

Learn About Midwives

One of the best ways to celebrate International Midwives’ Day is by learning about Midwifery and the role it plays in home-birthing.

Show Appreciation

If you know a midwife or one helped you give birth to your child, be sure to send them a thank you card or call them and tell them you appreciate them. Midwives tend to care very deeply about the children they help bring into the world, and love updates!

Share with Others

There are a number of other steps that you can take in order to do your part of International Midwives’ Day. Why not look for different ways that you can inform the public about midwives? You could organize a high-visibility event for the day.

This includes anything from a marathon to a public performance, march, or a rally. Another option is to create a social media campaign. If you’re savvy with the Internet and you have a good online presence, you can encourage people to join in and share their own experiences regarding midwifery care.

Host a Virtual Midwifery Workshop

Invite midwives to share their experiences and knowledge in an online workshop. Community members can learn about childbirth, prenatal care, and the midwifery profession. This educational event fosters understanding and respect for midwives’ vital work.

Why Celebrate International Midwives’ Day

There are a number of different reasons why International Midwives’ Day is an important celebration. This includes the following…

  • There is a shortage of midwives – When we discuss all of the amazing things that midwives do, it’s also important to take into consideration the fact that there is a shortage of midwives, especially in developing countries! This means that there are many challenges, and a lot of midwives experience a lack of support, low status, and poor pay.
  • Midwives save millions of lives every year – Since 1990, the globe has seen a steady decrease in newborn and maternal deaths. One of the main reasons for this is because more women are getting skilled midwifery care.
  • Midwives provide critical medical care – Not only do midwives save lives, but they also provide a wide range of other important medical services. They can perform cervical and breast cancer screenings, as well as offering counseling and services. In some countries, they are also able to carry out basic emergency obstetric care.
  • Midwives are important defenders of women’s rights – Last but not least, we cannot mention the importance of midwives without discussing how they do lots in terms of advancing the rights of females around the world. They can assist survivors of gender-based violence, as well as helping to prevent female genital mutilation (FGM). The importance of their work should not be undervalued.

History of International Midwives’ Day

The history of Midwifery goes back to prehistory, though there are records all over the world of midwife traditions. These women are those who made a study of the birthing process and the vital role it plays in perpetuating the species and its cultural significance.

While it’s true in ancient days their practices were based heavily in experience and superstition, today’s midwives are just as capable and competent at seeing a woman to term as the more commonly used OB/GYN’s and Obstetricians.

Although there are men who specialize in midwifery, thousands of years of tradition has rendered this field of medicine almost exclusively a woman’s art.

So much so, in fact, that in order to be a midwife in ancient Greece you had to have given birth yourself, making it an exclusively female practice. It is this history that led to the division between Midwifery and Obstetricians, a split that took place in 17th Century Europe.

While the practice of midwifery fell off for a while in the past couple hundred years, there is a rising movement towards home birth that is making this practice more relevant than ever.

The International Day of the Midwife started in 1992 to recognize midwives’ critical role in maternal and newborn health. The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) launched this special day after discussing the idea at a 1987 conference in the Netherlands.

Their goal was clear—highlight the profession’s importance and push for better support, training, and working conditions. Since then, over 50 countries have embraced the occasion, holding events, workshops, and campaigns to celebrate these essential healthcare workers.

There have been a number of different themes over the years for International Midwives’ Day. Typically, a new theme will be set every year. However, there have been some years whereby themes continue onto the next. Some of the themes we have seen so far include these:

  • The World Needs Midwives Now More Than Ever
  • Midwives Changing the World One Family at a Time
  • Midwives: For a Better Tomorrow
  • Women and Newborns: The Heart of Midwifery

Irrespective of the theme for the particular year, these are the three key aims when it comes to International Midwives’ Day:

  • Inform everyone with an interest in both justice and health that midwives are critical in lowering neonatal and maternal mortality and morbidity.
  • Celebrate the achievements of midwives, as well as their contribution to improving newborn, maternal, reproductive, and sexual health outcomes.
  • Motivate policymakers to implement change by recognizing the unique professional role of a midwife, as well as lobbying for adequate midwifery resources.

International Midwives’ Day FAQs

Why is May 5th significant for International Midwives’ Day?

May 5th aligns with the spring season in many countries, symbolizing new life and growth—an apt metaphor for the work of midwives.

This date also allows global organizations to synchronize awareness campaigns during a month that celebrates family and mothers.

What are some ancient midwifery practices still used today?

In some regions, midwives still use herbal remedies passed down through generations for labor pain relief.

These traditional techniques, such as using warm compresses or birthing stools, are now integrated with modern methods in holistic birthing centers.

Do all countries recognize midwifery as a profession?

No, not all countries formally recognize midwifery as an independent healthcare profession.

In some nations, midwifery is merged with nursing, while others rely on community-trained midwives who lack official certifications.

What role do midwives play in disaster-stricken areas?

Midwives provide critical care during crises, from delivering babies in refugee camps to offering prenatal care in war zones.

Their ability to adapt and work under pressure makes them indispensable in emergencies.

Are there unique midwifery tools from the past?

Yes! In the 18th century, some midwives used a tool called the “pelvimeter” to measure pelvic dimensions. Others carried amulets or charms believed to protect mothers and babies during delivery.

What superstitions surrounded midwives historically?

In medieval Europe, midwives were sometimes accused of witchcraft because of their knowledge of herbs and childbirth. Some believed they had magical powers to influence fertility and safe deliveries.

How do indigenous communities celebrate midwives?

In parts of Guatemala, communities hold ceremonies thanking midwives for their spiritual and medical roles. These events often include blessings, gifts, and traditional dances.

Are midwives part of royal births?

Yes, midwives often assist with royal deliveries. For example, Queen Elizabeth II had midwives alongside doctors during her children’s births. Today, they remain essential to royal birthing teams worldwide.

How do countries without midwives manage childbirth?

In regions without midwives, traditional birth attendants (TBAs) fill the gap. They rely on ancestral knowledge to assist with deliveries, but the lack of formal training can lead to higher risks for mothers and babies.

What symbols represent midwifery globally?

Hands, often shown cradling a baby, symbolize midwifery’s nurturing role. In some countries, a lotus flower or stork is used to represent fertility and new life.

Today is National Astronaut Day https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/national-astronaut-day/ https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/national-astronaut-day/#respond Mon, 05 May 2025 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.daysoftheyear.com/?post_type=days&p=93680 Space travel brings with it a myriad of adventures and discoveries! And the astronauts who get to travel in space are a rare and special type of person.

Take time on National Astronaut Day to celebrate these people who have had some of the most unique experiences possible for a human being by traveling beyond the earth and through space!

How to Celebrate National Astronaut Day

National Astronaut Day is a great time to learn more about astronauts while showing respect and admiration for them. Celebrate the day by implementing some of these ideas:

Read Books About Astronauts

One super way to celebrate and enjoy National Astronaut Day would be to get more educated and learn more about who astronauts are and what they do. An excellent option would be to read a biography about an astronaut. Choose from one of these (or read them all!):

  • Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars by Col. Eileen M. Collins (2022). Read the story of this woman who was an aviation pioneer among her peers, as one of the most recognized and admired women in the world.
  • First Man, The Life of Neil A. Armstrong by James R. Hansen (2005). This biography tells the story of the first man who walked on the moon.
  • John Glenn, A Memoir by John Glenn (1999). This autobiography reveals interesting details that could only come from an insider not only to the space program but also for American politics.
  • Sally Ride: America’s First Woman in Space by Lynn Sherr (2014). This definitive biography reveals exclusive highlights from Sally Ride’s family and partner.

Learn Fun Facts About Astronauts

When you celebrate National Astronaut Day, it might be fun to collect some interesting facts that can be shared with friends and family members to raise awareness for the day.

For instance, did you know that astronauts actually have to wear a special kind of diaper? That’s right, these are called ‘maximum absorbency garments’ that need to be worn when they go on long space walks or wear heavy equipment that is difficult to take off and on.

Not only that, but when in space, the bones and muscles of astronauts can easily waste away, so it’s important that astronauts work hard to get enough exercise. Plus, because of microgravity, astronauts can actually get up to 3% taller after spending time in space. They’ll eventually return to their normal height after three to four months back on earth.

Finally, if an astronaut cries in space, their tears don’t roll down their cheeks. Instead, they simply collect on their faces to create large globules of tears. So sad!

Watch a Film About Astronauts

Get involved with the adventure of a lifetime by watching a documentary film showing all about space travel. Or, try watching a movie that was made to portray the unique stories of the various astronauts who have been part of the space program for the last five decades and more, such as one of these:

  • Apollo 13 (1995). This movie directed by Ron Howard has an all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, is based on the true story of the Apollo 13 space mission to the moon that was aborted and almost ended in a fatal disaster.
  • First Man (2018). Based on the book of the same name by James R. Hansen, this movie follows the story of Neil A. Armstrong (played by Ryan Gosling) leading up to the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969.
  • The Right Stuff (1983). This epic historical film drama is based on the non-fiction novel of the same name, which tells the details of the first 15 years of the US space program. Starring Ed Harris and Scott Glenn.
  • Lucy in the Sky (2019). Featuring Natalie Portman, this film is loosely based on the life of astronaut Lisa Nowak who was in space in 2006 and spent her time controlling the robotic arms of the International Space Station.

Throw a National Astronaut Day Party

Whether it’s a group of teachers hosting a National Astronaut Day party at school for their students or a gathering of friends who get together to celebrate and honor the day at home, this is a great time to host a party!

Invite guests to wear a space themed costume if they would enjoy dressing up. Serve snacks that are themed around the idea of rocket ships, stars, space, the moon and more. It would be fun to be entertained by playing various games that go along with the theme of astronauts, or watch a film or documentary to help with learning more about who astronauts are and what they do.

Finally, during the party, don’t forget to play a space themed list of music that will keep things moving. Choose songs like Space Oddity (aka Ground Control to Major Tom) by David Bowie; Rocket Man by Elton John; or Man on the Moon by R.E.M.

History of National Astronaut Day

The first American made his adventure into space travel on May 5, 1961, when Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. made his historic 15 minute suborbital space journey. Since that time, the astronauts and cosmonauts who have continued the expedition into the virtually unknown world of space have been heroes of exploration!

National Astronaut Day was founded to pay honor and respect to the American astronauts of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The purpose behind the day is to provide an opportunity for astronauts to share their stories and experiences for the rest of the world. The hope is that these types of stories will encourage and inspire young people to pursue an interest in the space sciences.

The first National Astronaut Day took place in 2017 and the day has been celebrated annually ever since to commemorate that first time of the United States human flight in space. The day was founded by the Uniphi Space Agency, which is a talent and marketing agency that has represented at least 20 different NASA astronauts.

Not had enough Star Wars on May the 4th? Thinking of stepping over to the Dark Side following Star Wars Day? Think you’d be a great Sith?

Well keep swinging those lightsabers, Revenge of the fifth is here to keep the force going with another Star Wars-themed observance!

Although some fans believe that ‘Revenge of the Sixth’ would make more sense since the number sounds a bit more like ‘sith’, it’s the fifth which has stuck since its the day after the fourth.

This makes for a great double day whammy of Star Wars celebration for those who just can’t get enough of the popular spacey fantasy series!

How to Celebrate Revenge of the Fifth

If you’re a fan of George Lucas’s most successful film franchise, today is a day for you to keep celebrating the things you love about them!

Attend a Dark Side Convention

Fresh from the fun of the previous day, you can take this day to celebrate the Dark Side. Join in with the numerous conventions across the world, getting together with like-minded friends, or watching your favorite films from the series.

Star Wars Movie Marathon

If you’re one of the few people not to have ever seen all the Star Wars films, this is a perfect day to grab some popcorn, flop onto the sofa, and have yourself a Star Wars marathon. And if you have any of your Tatooine-loving friends coming by, just make sure you don’t start an argument about who shot first…

Read Star Wars Lore

Another way to celebrate the day is to get into the Star Wars lore. The events that unfold through the nine Star Wars films are actually just the tip of the iceberg.

The original universe envisioned by George Lucas is truly enormous, with a history that stretches back tens of thousands of years, and spans countless planets. Episode I is by no means that beginning of the Jedi and Sith saga. The battle had already been raging for many thousands of years.

Play Star Wars Video Games

For the gamers among you, numerous video games commemorate the story and help you experience the universe yourself, up close and personal. Options include Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

History of Revenge of the Fifth

As far as movie quotes go, “may the force be with you” has got to be up there on the list of most famous, most quoted, and most loved in film history. Even if you’ve never seen the films, it’s highly likely that you’ve heard this one before.

Ever a fan of a pun, the movie-loving community made Star Wars day after seeing the joke behind May the 4th sounding especially similar to the first half of the famous quote.

And it just so happens that another film in the Star Wars series, Revenge of the Sith, sounds a bit like the fifth. Sort of.

Because it immediately follows Star Wars Day, Revenge of the Fifth is meant to be a day for fans to pass over onto to the Dark Side – for one day, at least. Today, Star Wars geeks will be celebrating the titular Sith Lords from the long-running franchise. Because bad guys need love too!

The first person to allegedly come up with “May the fourth be with you” was an advertiser publishing in a London newspaper in 1979. While it was indeed a Star Wars reference, it was a comical congratulatory note to Margaret Thatcher. She had won her first election – a victory that just so happened to fall on May the 4th.

As you might imagine, though, that wasn’t the last time somebody uttered that particular reference in the public domain. The catchphrase continued to show up again and again in various political debates and advertising.

For instance, there was a reference to May the Fourth be with you in a parliamentary debate in 1994. Then there were additional references to it in popular publications, such as the book The Science of Star Wars by the astrophysicist Jeanne Cavelos.

Various political figures, including Boris Johnson, have also publicly celebrated Star Wars. The concept of Revenge of the Fifth, however, didn’t enter the public consciousness in the first trilogy of films.

The saga’s debut was simply called Star Wars (though it was later renamed Star Wars: A New Hope to help it slot in with the rest of the saga). The next film was The Empire Strikes Back, released in 1980, and then Return of the Jedi in 1983.

None of these titles referenced “the revenge of the sith.” Nor did any of the characters utter the phrase in the first trilogy. It wasn’t a part of the script.

It was only with the release of the second trilogy that the term emerged. Revenge of the Sith – Episode III according to the Star Wars timeline – hit cinemas in 2005. So pop culture references to “Revenge of the Fifth” are relatively recent compared to May the Fourth.

Reports suggest that the concept of Revenge of the Fifth first emerged after the first officially organized Star Wars day in 2011 in Toronto, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema. The event was allegedly so successful that fans came up with the idea of “Revenge of the Fifth” to extend the holiday to the following day.

(The date of the celebration may come with some distinct competition, however, since it coincides with Cinco de Mayo – which many people celebrate as Mexico’s commemoration of its victory over the French in 1862.)

They delve into expanded universe lore, discussing these characters’ roles in shaping the Sith Order. Online fan art competitions often spotlight these obscure villains.

How has “Revenge of the Fifth” influenced Star Wars fan fiction?

May 5th inspires fan fiction centered on Sith backstories or alternative timelines.

Writers explore “what if” scenarios, such as Anakin Skywalker fully embracing his Sith destiny.

Some create humorous stories imagining the Sith struggling with mundane tasks like grocery shopping while staying in character.

Hoagies make the perfect lunch! In fact, that was their original purpose as they were used as an easily packable meal by the shipyard workers. So even if there’s not a lot of time for going all out in celebration, it’s easy to give a nod to National Hoagie Day by enjoying a grab-and-go sandwich lunch at a local deli.

Learn About Hoagies

Try out some of these fun facts to impress coworkers or friends for National Hoagie Day:

  • The perfect hoagie roll was invented when Bucelli’s Bakery joined forces with DePalma to create a delicious 8-inch long roll, which eventually became the standard for hoagies.

  • Americans eat more than 300 million sandwiches each year, many of which would classify as hoagies!

  • Premium hoagies can be made with upscale ingredients, such as imported Italian lunch meats, prosciutto, gourmet cheeses and more.

  • One of the biggest mysteries that seems to surround hoagies is the questions about what makes them different from other sandwiches like subs, heroes and grinders. But honestly, there isn’t much of a difference and they are basically the same sandwich just going by a different name.

Make a Homemade Hoagie Sandwich

It seems only right and good to celebrate hoagie day by fixing up a delightful and delicious homemade hoagie for yourself and those you love!

Start by slicing a soft or crispy long bread roll, throw in some favorite cold cut slices and don’t forget to add the cheese. For those who want to be fully authentic, don’t put mayo on there but, instead, stick with good quality olive oil and some Italian herbs. Finish off with some tomato and lettuce for a bit of extra crunch.

And for those who really want to get serious about National Hoagie Day, why not bake your own bread to craft your artisanal sandwich with? Fresh bread is certainly best.

Don’t keep the joy of the hoagie all to yourself. Snap a pic and share that tasty creation on social media, so other observers can join in on the fun. And perhaps it might be fun to invite some friends over for a hoagie making party. Or create a hoagie sandwich making line in the breakroom at work.

Simply line up the ingredients, including artisan bread rolls, gourmet cheese options, lunch meats and veggies, and let people pile them on as high as they like. Add some condiments such as mayo, herbs and spices, or olive oil and everyone can enjoy what they love!

History of National Hoagie Day

The humble hoagie first appeared on the plates of Americans around or soon after 1953, when the sandwich was first made in the Philadelphia shipyards from WWI.

At the time, Italians working in the shipyards would make a sandwich by putting meats, cheese and lettuce in a soft baguette-shaped roll and bring it to work with them. The story goes that this easy-to-make but delicious creation would soon be labeled with the nickname of ‘the Hog Island’.

Then, maybe because it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue easily, it would soon be shortened to “hoggie” and then eventually would become known affectionately as the ‘hoagie’.

There’s also a second theory of the hoagie’s birth, where the sandwich is said to have been created by street food vendors who were known as ‘hokey-pokey men’ in the early 20th century. Supposedly, these food sellers would slice a long loaf in half and stuff it with antipasto salad before selling it as a filling snack. And perhaps they were also dancing the “hokey-pokey” at the same time?!

Well-known in Philadelphia, the hoagie sandwich is so enjoyed in the city that, in 1992, the mayor Ed Rendell declared that the hoagie should be considered the official sandwich of the city.
